Bazaar’s Senior Contributing Editor interviewed Florence Welch at the Empress pub in London’s Victoria Park on a sunny Saturday in April. In our exclusive interview, which hits newsstands on Monday June 4th Florence opens up about her family, the fashion designers she calls friends and her obsession with all things Royal.

But what was it like to meet Florence, one of fashion’s rising icons and one of British music’s brightest stars? Vassi Chamberlain explains.

‘Even though it was unmistakably Florence she wasn’t dressed like Florence and she didn’t act like Florence. Even I did a double take to make sure it was her because she looked so chic, so groomed, so not her stage herself. She looked like a very chic Knightsbridge mother. She told me she likes playing with her looks, and at the moment she said she likes old lady chic, like the Olsen twins who she adores.

She couldn’t be less starry or affected. She’s funny and laughs a lot. But she was also twitchy and distracted. Interviews are obviously a bore for her and on a sunny Saturday she would obviously have rather been with her friends not talking about herself! Florence can more than hold her own. It’s crazy to think she’s just 25, she’s very self-possessed: the way she articulates herself, the way she eats, what she ordered, the way she drank her tea. She’s very precise, she knows what she wants.

With me she was charming, couldn’t have been nicer. Not in a smarmy or over-friendly way. I genuinely liked her. We met twice, and at the shoot she was even sweeter. She does get nervous but her self-possession means she can express herself if she’s feeling overwhelmed. She’s clearly emotionally intelligent and I would say that’s a lot to do with her parents.

In a moment of stress on the shoot, with questions coming at her from all angles, Florence asked for time out to get her thoughts together. This is a woman who doesn’t like to be treated differently, who chooses the spotlight not for reasons of ego, but as a means of expression.

Her family holds her together; she talked about her parents and siblings constantly. She’s not quiet, she’s thoughtful but when something excites her (like the shoot location) she’s shrill and screechy like a teenager and talks a lot and fast, and her laugh is like a foghorn: loud and can be heard for miles. I think what surprised me is her age…she has the carriage and confidence of an older person. She’s sophisticated. I loved meeting her. It sounds cheesy and predictable but I would like to see her socially, to chat to her because she’s funny and she’s obsessed by reading like I am, in fact one of our favourite books is the same: Middlesex by Geoffrey Euginides.’

Scroll down to watch our behind the scenes interview with Florence on the shoot where she reveals what she would do if she were queen for the day. Clue – it involves running around the Queen’s garden nude.
